Hi, i just joined this forum, my names Brian and I'm 21. I am primarily a script writer, i don't have much experience with voice acting but i would like to become a great voice actor. With that said, i have a few questions and i would greatly appreciate it if you could guide me on my path, u don't have to answer all the questions, just whatever ur most knowledgable on;
What sort of regimen do the best voice actors follow follow?
What qualities separate the very best from the average?
What are the best ways to learn, is it better to get a coach immediately or experiment on my own first?
What role does a coach play and how important is it to have a "good" coach instead of an "average" vocal coach at this stage of my learning curve?
How long does it take to get good enough to reach professional level, what are the different stages you go through before you get to professional level?
What are the most important core fundamental skills/talent to become a great voice actor?
What are some great core fundamental exercises that i can do daily?
How difficult is it to learn a completely new dialect and learn to speak it with the fluency of a native, how long does this take?
thank you

Honestly these are all " How long is a piece of string?" questions. For some it takes years, others find sucess really quickly. I would advise you keep reading up on VO, and start practicing. Perhaps audition for some of the fan projects on here and see if you actually enjoy VO!

My name is Brian, I'm also 21. Strange...
Anyway, after searching myself online over the past dozen months, I've found its hard to come by information on how to better yourself as a voice actor.
There are various podcasts and such that can help you, google these for example:
Crispin Freeman's voice acting mastery
http://podcasts.voices.com/voiceoverexperts/archives.html
Also there are a few books (not many), One that I recommend you get from your local library
(or buy online, there are a few copies on amazon at the moment) is:
The Art of Voice Acting by James R. Alburger
^ This covers a lot of exercises/technical aspects/Job related information, although its written for American voice actors so it doesn't really help us UK dwellers
I may have some more sites and things favourited, If I get round to rummaging through them I shall let you know if I find anything useful.
edit: As mentioned in the comment below, Practice practice practice ∞
