Hi there!
My name is Alexander MacLeod.
(Please Note: In time, this job will almost certainly be paid. As a budget for the project has not yet been worked out, the amount is still undecided. It will likely include a combination of a small initial sum plus royalties. When I become clearer on this issue I will let those who have auditioned know. Also it is my intention to turn this product into a commercial Video game, so it will likely be distributed widely.)
For my university Games Design project I will very likely be creating a modern-warfare combat game in the style of Battle: Los Angeles meets Transformers. I intend to continue the production of this game following the course and turn it into a commercial title.
The game will focus on the conflict between a group of US soldiers vs gigantic alien robots (think Decepticons from Transformers) and will follow the exploits of a particular group of marines amidst the chaos. I will need voice acting talent for each of the different Marines that make up part of the squad, and am also interested in casting for the distorted voices of some of the enemy units. More roles will become available as I work out more about the project, but for now Im fairly confident about the need of the roles provided (even if names may change).
Currently I am just trying to get a feeling for different options, so many different interpretations of each character listed are welcome. Please see the bottom of this post for format details and where to send auditions.
Sergeant John Temple
Age: Early 40s
Caucasian Male
Temple is the leader of the unit and the main protagonist. He is unafraid, leaderly, controlled and professional. He is slightly more senior than the rest of the marines, and I am hoping to get a voice that reflects this gruff, leader-like, charismatic maturity.
Accent
Nationality: Scottish, American or English.
I am open to suggestion about exactly what voice to use for Temple. On the one hand I like the idea of something cynically-rugged and american, like "Sam Fisher's Voice" (You can youtube - Michael Ironside for this) from the "splinter-cell" game series; or perhaps - still on the american side of things - something a bit closer to George Clooney. On the other hand, on the scottish side of things, I am also very much partial to something more akin to Sean Connery - something more old-man-like (though please dont just post up impressions of Sean Connery-lol).
Sample Dialogue Lines:
1. (Briefing Room: Authoratative and Informatively) Alright! Listen up Marines! We are going into a live-fire combat scenario. This is the real thing gentlemen; those metal-jobs are tearing up every major city along the eastern seaboard. ...We will be transported by armored carriers to this drop-zone. (indicates some location on a projector screen map). Once we touch down we need to establish a defensive perimeter until Charlie company can also get into position. These f*ckers have control of the air all across the Chicago area. Let me make this clear: It is our job to take-out their ground-to-air defences.... We need to regain control of the air; until then we are being provided with mortar support from the south. Enemy SAM sites are located here, here and here. We don't have much time, so contact your C.O.s about the details. Goodluck gentlemen, and let's get moving.
2. (In-Game Command, pointing) Take cover over there.
3. (In-Game Command) Diaz! Concentrate fire on its optics!
4. (Across the Radio, whilst aiming laser designator) Echo Team, this is Alpha company, requesting strike package F-K-9er. Painting Target...
5. (Shouting whilst in cover under fire) Save that Rocket corporal! It won't penetrate its armour! We need mortar fire on that thing!
6. Everyone off the vehicle now! Move! Move! Move!
7. (Fighting back pain through clenched teeth, as he gets hauled to his feet, having been wounded) - Son of a!
8. (Calmly but still in a raised voice, with a positive tone of victory) Good work marines. We showed those f*ckers who their dealing with.
9. (On Radio) Understood control ... (Putting Radio away) Alright men! We have a new objective. In exactly 15 minutes, this place is going to be pancaked. VTOL transport is on its way to pick up any survivors before the bombs fall. So that means we're moving double time marines! Tyler!! Secure that vehicle and get us to that rendezvous now!
10. (Shouting) You have your orders corporal!
Corporal Michelle Diaz
Age: Mid 20s-Early 30s
Caucasian Female (possibly Latina Female, though less likely)
Diaz is the unit's main sharpshooter. She has a tom-boyish personality that makes her "one of the boys", but still maintains a sassy female charm to her. She is fiercly loyal and obedient, and with little concern or fear for her safety quickly carries out her orders to the letter. When she's in the middle of a combat situation she is down to business and professional; but when the heat is off, she becomes much more social and has a jibe at her fellow marines.
Accent
Nationality: Australian, American, English, South African.
My first thought for her accent was similar to the character "Oerba Yun Fang" from Final Fantasy XIII (voiced by Rachel Robinson), a sort of australian version of Lara Croft's 'devil-may-care' voice. But I am open to quite a few possibilities. It's important with her that when voice acting her, lines where she is in combat are treated with an affirmative, professional attitude; whilst lines where she is speaking in non-combat situations are more engaging and character-building. There's a lot of room within an american accent for her character as well. If any English accents are used, they should try to be a little sophisticated; though this isnt necessarily true of the other accent types.
Sample Dialogue Lines:
1. (In-Combat, in response to a command) Moving into position.
2. (In-Combat, in response to a command) Roger that. On my way.
3. (In-Combat, in response to a command) Got it.
4. (In-Combat, giving someone medical attention, with a hint of her personal side chucked in) Come on soldier! You ain't dying on me today.
5. (calmly, saddened and concerned) sigh*... my family's out there somewhere. They're ... they're probably dead by now.... I know I can't think like that, but ... sigh* ... (trying to brush away the depression) you know what? I'm Ok, i'm Ok ... I just need to get my head in the game, that's all.
6. (jokingly poking fun at another Marine whilst in armoured transport) Sounds like you wanna ask it out on a date. +smiling chuckle
7. (exhausted, out of breath, but trying to brief the Sergeant on situation) Sir, it's a complete mess up there. The entire street is just a pile of rubble. No way we can get through.
8. (sarcastically) Oh yeh, I'm doing just swell. (change of tone) Now help me up you idiot!
Corporal Chris Marshall
Age: Mid-Late 20s
Caucasian Male
The youngest of the Marines. Marshall takes jokes against him on the chin and he doesn't let anything get him down. Overall he is a serious fella, but is still charismatic rather than broody. A great example of the sort of character I have in mind for him is Imlay from Battle:Los Angeles.
Accent:
Nationality: American, Canadian (maybe English, but less likely)
Again, I had Imlay from Battle:Los Angeles in mind for this; but as always I'm willing to experiment and see what's out there.
Sample Dialogue Lines:
1. (Shouting) Incoming!!
2. (In awe and silent horror of having just witnessed a desolated landscape) Holy... What happened here?
3. (In-Combat, in response to command) You got it Sergeant!
4. (In-Combat, shouting) Flank em! Flank em!
5. (In-Combat, from cover) Tossing smoke!
6. (laughing, at a colleagues failed joke) The hell Tyler? That don't even make sense. We about done with the mom jokes now? ye?
7. (Improvise) Word is, they're here for "us". ... Ye... They take people ... animals ... plants - any biological material they can get their hands on. Then they stick us in some big-ass blender where they turn our asses into fossil fuels to keep themselves runnin'. ... That's what I heard anyway.
8. (Calling out, In pain, in the dark, having nearly been crushed by a cave-in) cough* ... Hey Diaz!! ... cough* ... Diaz! That you!? Sh*t! You alive!! ... OK. OK. Stay put! I'm gonna get you outta there! Just stay put!
Corporal Miles Tyler
Age: Late 20s - Early 30s
African-American Male
Tyler is the team's heavy weapon specialist. He is a family man at heart, and wants nothing more than to 'stick it' to the enemy to make sure the world is a safer place for his recently born daughter. At the same time he has a very typical military frat-boy, outspoken demeanour. He is very extravert and often his bravado and adrenaline get the better of him. Tyrese Gibson's character in the Transformers movie fits perfectly for Tyler.
Accent
Nationality: American
Again I'm going unashamedly go back to Tyrese Gibson here in terms of a great example of the sort of voice I'm going for. Although, as long as it is a voice for an african-american man, I'm willing to experiment.
Sample Dialogue Lines:
1. (Concerned, on the side, to a buddy) Is this fo' real man?
2. (Shouting at enemy whilst in cover) Come on!!! You want this!!? Huh!? You want this!!? Come Get Some!!!!
3. (In-Combat, in response to command) You got it chief!
4. (In-Combat, in response to command) Yes sir!!
5. (After combat, half-chuckling to himself, half shocked) Ho-Hoo! ... Daaa-mn bro! That's one ugly mothaf*cka!
6. (frustrated and with elevated heartbeat) Sergeant, you gotta get on the wire to these boys back at base camp. They're talking about leveling the entire Chicago area. ... (pause) ... I know sir; I already told em. They said we've got 15 minutes to reach the L.Z. or we're toast. They ain't jokin around sir.
7. (Victory after big explosion and dead enemy) Ho-Hoo!!!!!!! Yeah Baby! That's what I'm talkin about!! Yeah!!
8. (Jokingly to colleagues whilst on Armored transport) Aw come'on girl? You know ya'th'only one for me. *big wet kiss noise on the cheek
Alien Robot
For the Alien Robots (or Onuva as they will be called) I am not looking for anything english. What I would like to hear is a number of 'sample dialogue lines' for the alien language. You can make up what you want for this, its a good opportunity to have fun with your microphone. Do not worry about pronunciation or accuracy. For this audition role I am FAR more interested in the voice actor really going off-the-ropes. The voice will be heavily distorted afterwards by our sound team anyway, so the overall tone with which the lines are presented is waaaay more important. Try to really go unusual with your voice with this one - the less human it sounds the better.
Deep and ominous is good, but equally skreachy and metallic is also desirable. Obviously your voice will be greatly altered by the audio department to sound inhuman, but we will need a base voice to work from. A great example of the sort of stuff Id be interested in is at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7ixdHQj3O4
Experiment around with your own lines, but for want of having a script to follow here's a couple of noises to try and reproduce:
1. Grow ttronostik'oronom goronzom
2. Tu'ok Shlay run no'taka
3. Tik' Krakata gozon nerum
4. Moroishma moren katakanui
5. Konom shroll o'noo'va ho'sen
Whatever voice you choose to use, the one thing I would like you to do is say as a separate line:
Line:-- -- "Onuva" (pronounced o-noo-vah ... not Ow-noo-vah)
It would also be useful to slip that into any alien dialogue lines you use, like I sneakily did in example 5.
These audition samples will not be used in the production of the game. These auditions are purely to get an idea of your voice as a voice actor - and are just that ... 'Auditions'. Consequently I would ideally like to hear an audio clip with you repeating each of the lines a couple of times. It will actually help me to have all the audition lines on the same sound file, but i dont mind if they in different sound files. please make sure you use a clear microphone and if necessary clear away any clicks or pops you dont want me to hear, prior to sending the audio file to me. The format should be either a .wav or a .mp3 file. I dont mind if it is mono or stereo, and dont mind if it comes compressed as well.
Please send all files, including a little information about yourself and your experience in Voice Acting (if any) to the following e-mail address: xandermacleod@hotmail.com
This project will begin properly in around a year's time, and so it is still very early days yet. When the time comes you will be expected to help out by doing the voice acting for "potentially" several hundred lines of dialogue (hence why this job will be paid). Despite this, I am setting an initial DEADLINE for the 1st of January 2012, in the event that some real gems come out of the woodwork early. If necessary I will hold a second round of auditions to keep options open.
When more details become available about the project I will have a clearer picture about payment. Please do not expect an absolute fortune, or for me to hire you for a rate that you have set. I'm afraid we will have a budget, and that this will entirely determine what we can do with our voice acting costs; regardless of how much I think your voice may be perfect for the role. :-)
Thankyou and all the best

Hi,
I'll be auditioning for the Robots at some point as I'm English but I may give being a solider a go if I think my american accent is good enough.
Also! I forgot to mention that even if the roles posted up so far don't seem to be in your bag-of-tricks; it's certainly worth having a go anyway. This is simply because Im certain there will be lots of smaller parts that I will be looking for voices for as well. Probably regular, nameless soldiers. So give anyone's lines a shot, and if I like it enough, I may consider you for one of those roles instead - regardless of accent.
:-)
This sounds very interesting,
I shall get round to auditioning for this at some point soon
I'll Audition for John Temple & The Robots :)

Sounds interesting, will send foward an audition for the alien robot, I like to make weird noises with me voice
Would love to audition for Michelle Diaz but can't for a while as I have one of those sexy flu voices atm =/
Thanks for all the auditions so far, much appreciated. Keep em coming, i still havent recieved any yet for Diaz or Tyler.
Remember deadline is 1st of jan for now. I will be accepting auditions up until then.
Hey! I'd totally love to audtion for Diaz, i'll get something together and get it sent to you asap. =)
Just bumping the post here; just to remind people the deadline is 1st of January.
All auditions welcome.
I will make sure to send you my audition sometime today. Thank you for the opportunity. I'm thinking of auditioning for Chris Marshall, but may have a pop at John Temple and the Alien Robot if I can do it in time.
Im liking the sound of the game and lines, ill probably send an audition in for the robots tonight but my mic quality is a little low at the moment. I have a new mic being delivered at the moment, I just want to get something sent in before the deadline, I will send another audition in a few days later if need be when I get the new mic delivered and then I would like to audition for a couple of soldier parts too, thanks!
Auditioned for Sergeant John Temple and Corporal Chris Marshall.

Hello all, and happy new year!
We've had some great auditions so far, and thanks to everyone who has sent something in.
I just wanted to let you all know that we are still interested in people sending in auditions.
For this reason I am extending the Deadline to the 1st of April. This is not an attempt to muck anyone around. We simply want to ensure we get the right voice actors for the job, and the project is still in its very early stages of its development cycle.
Thankyou for your patience and hope you all had a lovely new year.
I posted an Audition for the Robotic Alien
:) Enjoy..
Going to Audition for Diaz!!! Loving the sound of the character already!
Sending samples for Diaz :)
Temple and alien audition posted.
Hello again everyone!
Thanks again to everyone who has auditioned. It's also wonderful hearing back from the community about the general level of support for the project.
I just wanted to let everyone who has auditioned know that even if we do not get back in touch with you personally, please do not lose heart.
We are actually keeping every single audition on file sent our way. When the time to bring aboard voice talent arises we will let everyone who has auditioned know through the email addresses they have used to send the audition from, alongside an update here.
-
I just wanted to let everyone know that in case you haven't heard back from us, and have thought that you have been unsuccessful. Don't lose hope! and again thankyou to everyone so far! :-)
Do keep the auditions coming!
-
Also, a couple of auditionees so far have asked the same question; so I thought I would clear that up here.
-
You are more than welcome if you wish (to both new auditions, and old alike) to send in a generic voice showreel alongside your audition. When it comes to later on projects down the road, we will keep referring back to our audition library for voice talent. So even if you dont think your voice is perfect for any of the roles outlined above, send us a voice showreel containing other stuff! :-) In the future we're going to need voice actors for completely different roles than the ones outlined, so a generic showreel can increase your chances later on down the line of being selected.
Anyway, take care folks!!
Xander MacLeod
Hi Alexander,
Very interested in the project, worked on something similar with a friend last year.
I have a new microphone en route, arriving in approx. 1 week. Until then, would you like me to drop you a possibly lower quality demo to give you an idea?
Kind Regards,
Jay Appleyard

yeh go for it. if you feel the new mic makes a huge difference, then im happy for you to send 2 separate auditions anyway.
i think i should be able to get an idea of the important stuff from an average quality mic anyway.
I will send an audition for Diaz today! I'm excited about the role :) I'm going to play around with a few accents and send them over.
Thank you!
Brittany
Very keen to have a go at this, I'll be sending some your way very soon once I've sorted a few things out with my recording equipment.
the deadline is upon us!
Thankyou to everyone who sent in auditions!
We will be getting back in touch with each of you who has auditioned so far to let you know the results. We will not be posting updates of results on the voiceacting.co.uk. website.
Because later on down the road we will be looking for more voice actors/actresses feel free to keep sending in auditions, even though the deadline has finished. We will however not be able to guarentee that you will have an opportunity to work on the current project, but we will keep your file on record for future sessions. (This is not an empty statemnt as it can often seem to be. We will keep you on record, and when we come to future auditions we will look at your audition again.)
Do be patient with us if you have sent in an audition so far and don't hear back from us straight away. We are quite busy at the moment, but we intend to get back in touch with each and every one of you.
Again, thankyou to everyone!! and best of luck!!

Good luck with your game!
