Contest winner: Interview with Martialmichael126

We sit down with the winner of our first ever voice acting contest and find out what makes him tick!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, and how you got into voice acting?
I'll try to keep this one short :) I'm a writer, a martial artist, and of course a voice actor. I think getting into voice acting all started way back when I picked up a copy of GTA III. I enjoyed the radio stations so much, I was inspired to my own fake radio thing for the game. Most of the projects never saw the light of day, but it gave me a base for voice acting, as well as some tech skill. But the thing that really got me into it, is I saw some really interesting fandubs on youtube. I figured I'd give it a try, and when I heard my voice come out of the character's mouth, I was hooked! From there I auditioned for a few things, got a few roles, and at one point, people just started coming to me. It seems my most popular voice is my Master Roshi impression, but it's far from my favorite.
You also write, do you think voice acting and writing are linked? Can improving in one discipline help the other?
I doubt they're linked. I've been writing for as long as I can remember whereas I've been voice acting for almost a year. My writing skill definitely helps when I have to write a script that I voice for, but as far as writing goes, I still prefer writing short stories, and things along those lines.
I notice in your demo reel you have a wide range of character voices, is mimicry a natural talent? If not how to you learn new voices?
Well some of my voices I was able to pick up really quickly, where as others, took a bit of practice. I usually just listen to a character in a cartoon, or an anime or whatever, and if I think I can do the voice, I give it a shot. And even though the voice usually doesn't sound much like who I imitate, this has been more motivating than disappointing.
Can you talk us through the process you used to add voices to your contest entry?
Selecting the voices was the hardest part. I wanted to show I could do something other than the tough guy voices I chose, but I had trouble finding something else that fit. After that, I had to decide what to say. So I just counted the flaps, and wrote the dialog accordingly. Then I recorded each line separately while watching the clip. After that I needed to record the fighting sounds. I used the same process as I did with the dialog. It took several tries, but it's not as difficult as it looks. And lastly, using a video editor I just aligned all the audio with the video.
What are you working on at the moment?
My 2 main projects are Detective Conan Abridged, and OmegaGroupGT's Dragonball GT the abridged parody series (which is quite a mouthful if I do say so myself) I'm also involved a lot of other comedy series based on anime. Too many to list honestly, but I'm also involved in a few original works such as FutureAgents, which I'm particularly excited to see the results of.
Anything else you'd like to say? Any advice?
Absolutely, and this goes for anything really. If it can be helped, never settle. It's not worth it. Giving it your all always yields the best rewards!
